Curly horses near North Bay

Bruce Tilson talks to visitors at The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair about American Bashkir Curly horses, which he breeds on his farm in Bonfield near North Bay.

Bashkir horses are a small enough for children but strong enough for adults. As well, their hypo-allergenic hair can be spun, woven or knitted into garments and saddle blankets.

Tall Trees Curly Horses is one of more than 40 organizations and businesses from the agriculture and equine sectors that make up the FedNor-supported Northern Ontario Agri-food Pavilion at this year's Royal in Toronto, which runs November 6 to 15.

It is time to fall-back - don't forget to change your clock

It is that time of the year again we have to change our clocks! In the night of Saturday to Sunday the time will be changed - and we get an additional hour of sleep (may be).

At the same time check the "personal fire protection" in your home: Change the batteries in your smoke alarms and clean them while you are at it.

A working smoke alarm can make the difference of surviving or not in case of a fire. Read more about this issue in today's
baytoday.ca: Time to change your clock

Rockview Camp goes Hollywood

It is amazing how many movie productions have passed through Ontario's Near North this year: Either in North Bay or Burk's Falls, Powassan, Mattawa, Sturgeon Falls and at Rockview Camp.

Yes, the last two days we had a local movie crew shooting some scenes around our place and in our cottages.

Why at Rockview Camp? They were looking for a specific style of cottage and thanks to the internet saw pictures of our cottages. Exactly what they are looking for: Nice rustic knotty pine wall boards, wood floors, enough space to set up their equipment and not to far.

Watching these guys arriving on location with an armada of 7 vehicles, lights, cameras on tripods, make-up crew and even a local tattoo artist is impressive.

When will we see this action movie? It will take some time to finish all the shooting, sound effects and music etc. and it will be way into 2012 until this movie will be presented to the public.

It may not be a Hollywood bestseller - but it is a Canadian production shot in the Near North by people living in the North.

We are looking forward seeing the "Echo of Silents" sometime in the future!

Celebrating independent day in North Bay's downtown area

This Saturday, October 17th, is an important day for independent book stores around the country and independent businesses in North Bay.

They are celebrating Independent's Day.

Many downtown businesses are involved in the campaign including Gulliver's which is also celebrating its 23rd birthday.

Owner Suzanne Brooks says money spent at an independent business means the money stays in the community and goes to support other local businesses and charitable organizations. As for Gulliver's, she says an independent local book store can be an advantage in terms of ordering books that meet local demand and not just national demand.
